How thoroughly reassuring. Gordon Brown — the man who in April 2010 was caught on an open Sky News microphone describing Gillian Duffy, a sixty-five-year-old lifelong Labour voter, as "just a sort of bigoted woman" for daring to raise concerns about Eastern European immigration — has now been recalled to public service as Sir Keir Starmer's Special Envoy on Global Finance. One trusts Mrs Duffy, if she is still with us, is suitably delighted to learn that the man who privately sneered at her for voicing the very concerns that have since driven Labour's traditional voters to Reform is once again advising the British state.

His judgement on people, like his judgement on gold, pensions and PFI, remains entirely consistent. The voters of Rochdale knew it then. The voters of Wales, Scotland and the English North have just confirmed it. The Labour high command, alas, never learns.

Yes I agree with this premise that it would be a tragedy if Starmer missed taking credit for and amplifying where he has made a difference on the immigration front ( mainly as a result of Mahmood).. but it would hardly be surprising given his inability to see what's right in front of him. He's made of cardboard. Rigid in places but with an alarming propensity to fold at the first hint of trouble. Essentially he's an incompetent.
